Sindarov Leads 2026 FIDE Candidates with Amazing 6/7 Score at Halfway Point
Javahir Sindarov is in a very strong position at the halfway point of the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament. He has scored six points from seven games at the Cape St. George Hotel and Resort in Peja, Cyprus. The closest player behind him is 1.5 points away. This is a very large gap and other players have admitted that it will be very hard to catch him.
The tournament runs from March 28th to April 16th.Eight of the world's best chess grandmasters are playing in both the open and women's sections. The winner of each section will get the chance to play for the World Chess Championship title.
Round seven, played on April 5th, was mostly quiet. In the open section, five of the six games ended in draws. However, one game had a winner.Grandmaster Wei Yi beat Andre Esapenpo in the only decisive game of the round. This result meant that no one could get closer to Sindarov at the top.Matthias Bluebaum and Hikaru Nakamura drew their game, and Ramesh Babu-Pragnananda and Fabiano Caruana also drew.
Wei Yi was very happy after his win, which was his first of the tournament. So happy to get a win in the first half of the event and before the second rest day, he said.Today we played sharply because my opponent chose an interesting idea and he decided to go for dynamic play, but he missed some moves and I had some chances to attack.
Sindorov drew his game against Anish Giri.Because of his big lead, a draw was a good result for him, but Sindorov explained that he still tried to win.Today, maybe an engine shows it's equal, but for a human, it's really a very unpleasant position to play with black, so I understand I'm playing for two results, and why not push this position? This attacking style is one reason why he is doing so well in the tournament.
Fabiano Caruana, the American grandmaster who has challenged for the world championship before, is in second place with 4.5 points from seven games.Even so, Caruana was honest about how difficult the situation is.Some people have very minimal chances at this point. Most of us have minimal chances at this point, he said.I'm the only one who's within 1.5 points, so it's not close, but the other players are even farther away.
Anish Giri is further back with 3.5 points.Nakamura and the other players also face a very difficult task. There are still seven rounds left to play, so it is not mathematically impossible to catch Sinderoff. However, most players have very little room for mistakes.Sinderoff's strong and consistent play has turned what should be a close competition into one where he is far ahead of everyone else.
The Women's Candidates Tournament is much closer.Ana Mucicic is in the lead after seven rounds, but Vaishali Rameshababu is only half a point behind after beating Tan Zhongyi in round seven. This win made the Women's section very exciting again.
Round seven also had one very long game.Divya Deshmukh and Katerina Lagno played 135 moves before agreeing to a draw. This showed how hard both players were fighting. With the standing so close, the second half of the women's section will be very interesting to watch.
There is a lot of money to win at this tournament. The open candidates has a total prize fund of 700,000 euros, the winner gets 70,000 euros, and players also earn 5,000 euros for every half point they score. The women's candidates has 300,000 euros in total, with 28,000 euros for first place and 2,200 euros per half point. But the biggest prize is the chance to play for the world title, something that now looks very possible for Sinderov.
After the second rest day, the tournament will continue.Karawana, Nakamura, and the others must try to win their games and reduce Sinderov's lead. For Sinderov, the challenge is to keep playing well while everyone is watching him closely. The 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament ends on April 16th.If the first half is anything to go by, this could be one of the most dominant performances the tournament has ever seen.
